![]() I will preface this lengthy post by saying that Beach House is my favorite band for a lot of different reasons. Overall fantastic record, early indication is I'd give it an 8 or a 9, and giving someone a flair The album ends with Rough Sleeper, giving the album a bit of a jump before one final etheral zone out with Somewhere Tonight. The only track that stands out as Weaker then the sum of the album are One Thing, it's good, just a little longer then it needed to be, or it could have gone more places. ![]() Elegy to the Void, the albums epic, is where I hope Beach House is going on future releases, It has an atmosphere to it that I can only compare favorably to m b v. On The Traveler Victoria seems to be doing her best Sade impression, and holy shit it works soooooo well. Those three tracks are a great opener, but the album really peaks with the Traveler & Elegy to the Void. Shes so Lovely is a classic Beach House ballad, while All Your Yeahs is upbeat jam, I'm getting a serious New Wave vibe from it. Majorette is a perfect opener, it perfectly sets your expectations of whats to come from the album. For people who complain about the 'sameness' of albums like Teen Dream, DO NOT avoid this album. I don't think that is a bad thing, because they go a ton of different ways with their dream pop sound here. I know a lot of people were hoping for them to keep going in the shoegaze direction Sparks teased, but that is not the case. ![]() This is a very somber album, even for Beach House. I'm going to avoid comparing and contrasting this record with Depression Cherry, but I will make one thing clear, this is definitely not just a companion record. It would be a wasted opportunity if they just used their talent to make some good songs while adding nothing substantial to the genre. They're very, very good, but keep using it to do the same thing over and over again. I'm being very critical of them right now, but I'm really just a frustrated fan. There's so much more to explore than this distilled version of the genre that we keep getting from Beach House. Kane maybe even more so, Yo La Tengo drew influence from all across rock music, The Radio Dept. Cocteau Twins were extremely experimental, A.R. They're making dream pop out to be this one-note genre, when it was never really about that. If you compare any of Cocteau Twins albums' to one another, there are huge differences. Beach House is sort of meandering in old territory by now. ![]() Each album was pioneering new ground that was fresh at the time. I agree, and the key difference is that Cocteau Twins were really the driving innovative force behind dream pop at the time.
